Celebrating Two Years, Savannah Style

We had a wedding in Atlanta to go to on Saturday, which we decided was the perfect excuse to head down to Savannah for a couple of days for an early celebration of our 2nd wedding anniversary.  First off, can I please say what a relief it is not to have to travel with a year-old piece of wedding cake?  I like this year already.

While I used to find excuses to visit several times a year while wedding planning, we hadn’t been back to Savannah since that beautiful day two years ago.   We made a point to visit all of our favorite spots, especially the ones that were a part of our wedding weekend.  We stayed at your favorite B&B, where we stayed Wednesday and Thursday nights before the wedding.  They serve warm chocolate chip cookies at night, and big Southern breakfasts in the morning.

The first night we ate dinner in the tavern of the Olde Pink House, sipping on mint juleps, listening to live jazz and remembering the fun we had two years ago when all of our friends met us down there after our rehearsal dinner.

After dinner we made a midnight visit to the fountain, remembering the promises we made to each other two years ago, and hoping park police would let us stay long enough to snap a goony photo.

The next morning after a hardy Southern breakfast on the terrace, we made our way back to the fountain to see it by daylight.  This time, the fountain was running, so Courtney could reminisce about how badly he had to pee during our ceremony.

Next we wandered over to the Round House Museum and explored the entire grounds.   It still amazes us how such a simple, industrial space was transformed to look so magical for our reception.

We spent the rest of the day walking and eating.  That’s the thing with Savannah, you walk everywhere (I’m guessing we walked 8-10 miles in one day), but you walk between various pit stops for amazing food.  So I suppose it’s a wash.  Of course we had more than our fair share of praline samples.

And discovered the World of Beer, where we stopped for some pre-dinner flights.

And because it’s our trip, damnit, and we can eat at the same place two nights in a row if we want to, we headed back to the Pink House for yet another delicious feast.  Because really, there’s no better place in town.  This time we were lucky enough to get a seat in “the vault,” the old bank vault which has been transformed into a wine cellar and recently been opened up for one couple a night to enjoy an extra special meal.  When I first read about the vault, I was worried it would be cold and silent, but very much the opposite.  The door opens up into the tavern, so you can still see and hear the live jazz.  So we stuffed our smiling faces with delicious Southern food and toasted our champagne to the past  just how lucky we are.
