Charlie’s Pizza: Sure Left an Impression

I am making slow but steady process in my mission to try all 50 of Food Network’s top U.S. pizza joints.  Actually, it’s been several weeks now since Carrie and her family took me to dine at Charlie’s Pizza in Yankton (or the Paris of South Dakota, as she describes it) but I figured I should wait until I was sure I was going to survive my injuries to blog about it.  While injury by pizza seems ridiculous, quite a few years back my Dad nearly choked to death on a string of pizza cheese and no one has ever questioned whether I am my father’s daughter.

Actually, I’m wondering if the pizza gods overheard my complaint that JoeSquared ‘s pizza came out to cold… because Charlie’s was quite the opposite.  In fact Goldilocks over here burnt my mouth so badly that it took over two weeks to fully heal and I was beginning to consider seeing a doctor (which usually requires that a limb be nearly detached, at a minimum).

Really, I think the only problem with the pizza was that it was so good that I couldn’t wait for it to cool down.  I got the Betty White, except I got it with red sauce.  Carrie and I also shared the Festus, which is the pizza that won Charlie’s a spot on the top 50 list.  Now I will go ahead and throw it out there that this is not the type of pizza I usually like… it has much more crust and much more cheese.  But said cheese tastes like it’s never seen the inside of a bag and the crust is perfectly chewy and has a secret ingredient, which Carrie’s dad explained is ‘enough salt to get your rings stuck on your finger the next day’.  The Festus didn’t do much for me, but the ‘Betty Red’ was phenomenal.
