Messy Kitchen Supper Club – More Than A War: Iraq & Afghanistan

I’ve had this theme in the back of my head since I first started the Messy Kitchen Supper Club. We have been at war in Iraq and Afghanistan for all of my adult life. For the younger generations, the war is likely all they can remember. Too easily, Iraq and Afghanistan become synonymous with conflict, but there is so much more to their story – including an incredibly rich culinary history.

In fact, stone tablets found in ancient ruins in Iraq show recipes prepared in the temples during religious festivals date back to 1900 BC – the first cookbooks in the world.

The beneficiary of this supper club was No One Left Behind, whose mission is to support the wartime allies that have served the US military and government as interpreters and in other support roles, often at great risk to their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

After a welcome cocktail, guests were pretty well warmed up for our feast featuring two dishes from each country.

Kibbeh – Iraqi fried lamb meatballs.
Zalata d’Iraqia with beets, cucumber, tomatoes and chickpeas.
Our main course: Qabuli Palow, a well-known and very tasty celebratory Afghan rice dish.
Last but not least! We finished things off with firnee, a sweet, cardamom-infused pudding.
