Monday Morning Marathon Meet-Up: Week 5

I’m not really enjoying marathon training this time around.  I remember last time, after my long runs, I’d get insane runner’s high.  I would be downright giddy the day after.  Perhaps I’m just not to that milage yet.  But regardless, training feels harder this time around.  I feel slow and out of shape.  Clearly I’m not out of shape in the big scheme of things… I’m doing a long run of at least 10 miles every week!  But they don’t feel good.  Fellow runners, you know what I mean.

I didn’t do as good of a job as I’d intended of cleaning up what I eat and drink this week.  (It’s the holiday season, what do you expect!?)  But I did have a nutritious meal the night before our long run, and I didn’t drink, which is more than I can about past weeks. Perhaps cleaning up my diet will make my runs feel better.  We’ll test that one out in the new year.  In the mean time, maybe I just need to be getting more runs in?

Scheduled Milage: 24
Actual Milage: 18

Long-run recap:
week5

Pre-run dinner:  Salmon with orzo and spinach, a salad and cornbread.  This felt like a healthy, well-rounded pre-run dinner.
Pre-run breakfast: English muffin with peanut butter and jelly
Hours of sleep: 7
Start time: 10:30am
Weather: 45 and sunny, perfect running weather!
Route: Down the mall to the Lincoln, across the memorial bridge into the Arlington Cemetary, down to the Mt. Vernon trail and past Roosevelt Island, across the Key bridge and onto the Canal Trail in Georgetown, past the Kennedy Center, back up the Mall and home.
How I felt: Tired and out of shape
Highlight of run: Highlight?  Can’t think of one.  Got a lowlight though: being outrun by teenage girls in riding boots.
Injuries, aches or pains: Foot pain – perhaps from trying to break in my new shoes on Wednesday?
Post-run brunch: No special treat today… my whole week has been holiday treats. Came home and made myself a great big salad.
