A Very Special Takeout Tuesday: Food For Life

I can’t believe that the Takeout Tuesday tradition has lasted three years now!   While I haven’t shared one in a while out of fear that you were sick of seeing my takeout and photos of us playing the same game, we’ve consistently gotten together at least every couple of months to eat, drink and argue with the delivery guy (well, mostly me doing the latter).  This month, I finally hosted a Takeout Tuesday I’ve been wanting to do for a while now: Food For Life!

IMG_2100Food for life is a culinary training, mentoring and work readiness program for young adults in Washington D.C., and they just happen to serve up gourmet takeout meals 3 blocks from my house on Capitol Hill!  And 2-3 courses for $15-20 – good luck finding that at a restaurant in D.C.!  Friends, you must try next time you don’t feel like cooking!  Support young people, get an amazing meal… definitely a win-win!

We enjoyed a gazpacho with watermelon and avocado relish as an appetizer, and an amazzzing main course of shrimp, roasted corn polenta, okra, tomatoes, bacon, and onion marmalade.  I’ve never cooked with polenta (unless grits count?), but this definitely inspired me to try!  In fact I’ve already saved a recipe…

IMG_2098 IMG_2099 IMG_2093Due to an exceptionally small class size, they weren’t able to do the flourless chocolate cake, but I made homemade vegan fudgicles that satisfied everyones sweet tooth!  We also changed things up by playing Mafia de Cuba, a new came I impulsively picked up in anticipation of visiting the country one day soon.unnamed-1

This is the second meal I’ve gotten from Food for life, and the last one left me just as impressed…

"Tonight we enjoyed a bibb lettuce salad with lemon tahini dressing, braised lamb with artichokes, green olives, spinach and cous cous and baklava spiced with coffee syrup and orange zest, the container of which I am currently LICKING (and not ashamed to admit it)."

They’re done for the summer, but be sure to check them out when they pick back up for the fall!
