The Do It Yourself Aspirations of a Self-Proclaimed Pack Rat

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been quite the collector.  I collected stamps, pogs, snow globes, stickers, zwibbledibbles, beanie babies, salt shakers, rocks, coins… the list goes on.    And there are certainly times that ‘collector’ is an overly kind description of my pack rat tendencies, such as when my mom had to cut the fronts off of all of the mini cereal boxes that I was ‘collecting’ because they were becoming a fire hazard.  Regardless,  here I am at twenty-five, still collecting, except this time it’s for my wedding.

I’ve got a number of do-it-yourself projects I’ve found myself quite excited about for a less than crafty girl.   We’ll see how I feel about them once I’m midway through, but right now (during the collecting stage) I’m raring to go.

The first is our centerpieces, for which I’ve been collecting bottle and jars of every size shape color and origin.   Think pesto, jelly, tequila and thanks to an ebay mishap involving me failing to read the dimensions, someone’s grandpa’s collection of airplane bottles.

Should project number two turn out as intended, it will truly be something I will keep for the rest of my life.  I’ve always hated that cut flowers die so quickly.  When I was younger, I always gave my mom potted plants for Mothers’ Day, which our cats made sure lasted only slightly longer than the cut ones would have, but still it seemed different somehow.  So when I saw this beautiful brooch bridal bouquet,  I just had to give it a try.

My mom had the wonderful idea to ask bridal shower guests to bring a brooch as a gift.  This turned out to be one of the most unique and special details of my shower.  I was given brooches that belonged to generations of my own family, Courtney’s family, and even one that has been worn by generations in one of my bridesmaid’s family.  They came from all over the country… one even came from Peru!  I truly can’t thing of a much more meaningful bouquet to walk town the aisle with.

And last but not least, I’ve recently fell in love with vintage doily runners.  I’ve found some beautiful inspiration and a great do-it-yourself sight, but have yet to have much success with my own collection… if only ebay shopping was my full-time job.
