The Most Wonderful Time of the Year: Ghouls, Goblins, Ghosts… and Chocolate!

I love Fall.  Halloween is my Christmas.  Don’t read too much into that, it’s not a statement about what deity I happen to worship.  I just really freakin’ love costume parties and chocolate. I’ve always gone all out for Halloween…

…until the last two years that is.  You see, in 2011 I ran the Marine Corps Marathon on Halloween day, and couldn’t help but look on with jealousy at all the costumed folks headed out for the night as we went home to bed, stuffed from a pre-race spaghetti dinner.  And then there was last year… who knew they didn’t celebrate Halloween in Bali?  So I had to go all out this year.

My grandmother always made my costumes growing up, and I certainly gave her some challenging requests.  I never wanted to be a princess or a bride, or any of the typical things a little girl might request.  No, I wanted to be Mickey the Sorcerer, a Rottweiler, Yogi Bear, a “Thing” (see above) and a Zwibble Dibble.  She never had any trouble making my costume look exactly as I wanted it, so I figured I could handle making myself a hand-sewn salmon nigiri costume.  Except that maybe my grandmother gave herself more than two days?  Regardless, I made it work.

Thursday I got to don it at thirstDC’s Spooktacular Halloween Party.  What’s better that science, booze, and sexy nerds?  Science, booze and sexy nerds in costume. Check it out.

Having been in our new home a full month now, it seemed about time to break it in.  What better way than a Haunted Housewarming party?  Of course I had to make some fun themed snacks…

Mozzarella and olive skewered eye balls
Spooky Spider Cheese ball with pretzel legs
Pumpkin veggie plate with ranch & pumpkin spice hummus with pita chips
Creepy Crawly pizza

As you may be able to tell, I drank a bit too much “witches’ brew” and didn’t get a very good picture of the pizza.  But pre-oven, the mozzarella was ghosts and bats and the spiders were made of olives and rosemary.  Okay, enough food.  Onto some awesome costumes…

Our dragon was clearly not cooperating.

In other news, it looks like Sandy won’t be canceling trick-or-treating .  We’ll have to share our candy with the kids after all.
