What will she wear?!

I can’t seem to escape these words lately!   They’re being trumpeted from cable news channels and spread across every publication from the National Enquirer to the New York Times… “what dress will she wear to the wedding watched around the world?”  And then this morning I came to the realization that they aren’t talking about me!   Well dang, apparently there’s another wedding… a royal wedding… that seems to have captured the attention of millions.   I was sad at first to find out that it’s not all about me, but that really would have been quite a bit of pressure.  I think I might even be a bit relieved.

But while I’m on the topic anyway, I may as well talk about dresses!   Yes, I’ve found one, and yes it’s perfect.  I must have tried on at least fifty; in fact I think I tried on every cut of dress there is, at every bridal boutique in the D.C. metro area, slowly defining what I liked (lace, ivory, fitted waist, big skirt) and what I didn’t (color, mermaid cut, sequins and beads, affordability).  Finally in December, after having tried on dresses since May, I went to Carine’s Bridal in Georgetown and found a Monique Lhullier gown that perfectly combines my likes.  I didn’t have the screaming, jumping, hugging, crying moment popular culture has made seem mandatory for brides, but I knew I wouldn’t ever find myself flipping through a magazine or walking down Wisconsin Ave and find a dress that made me question my decision, and for me that was ‘a moment.’  Oh, and they had to bribe me with champagne to convince me to take it off, which I think is a good sign.

You see, I’m an indecisive perfectionist, and this is not a good combo for planning a big event… say a wedding.  I think the groom may be the only aspect of my wedding that I didn’t try out a thousand options before making a decision (but hey, that’s better than the than the other way around, right?)  We visited venues until I was certain we would never find one I loved, and then we did.  And I’m pretty sure I was being judged, just a little, when I wanted to try the chocolate ganache with just one more type of cake, and finally found myself eating it with a spoon (Not sure I can blame that one on being indecisive, but doesn’t mean I can’t try). Luckily, I’ve had plenty of time and some very patient compadres, two things I would not have wanted to plan a wedding without!

Anyways, just like I have to wait until Friday to see Kate’s dress, you will have to wait until October to see mine.  But that doesn’t mean you can’t see pictures of the ones I ruled out along the way!

DO try on anything your mom wants to see. Going through labor gives her that right. However, DON'T buy it just because she likes it! This Monique gown was originally $10k+, with the price slashed because it was on sample sale... and it made me feel like a confetti marshmallow.
DON'T buy a dress just because you're starstruck that you hugged the designer, and she's kind of a big deal. I love the idea behind Adele Wechsler's eco-friendly gowns, but can't help but think I dodged a bullet when I recall how close I came to buying this (a contract was in hand and hugs were exchanged).
DO try on fun dresses you have no intention to buy, because really, when are you going to get to do this again?! Example: this $12k Oscar de La Renta that made me look like a vanilla cupcake.
This dress was fun... for a gala.
I wanted to like this dress... the lace back was gorgeous! But despite inadvertently trying it on in multiple stores, it just wasn't for me.
Not a flattering cut! I knew I wouldn't like this one before I even put it on but the saleswomen insisted!
DO bring a wonderful and very patient friend along who will take endless photos and drink champagne with you the morning after countless birthday shots!

Johanna
