Whole30, Day 5: An Exercise in Willpower

Today was the first day that really tested my willpower.  We had a going away lunch at work with Potbelly’s sandwiches, milkshakes, cake and ice cream.  And afterwork all of my colleagues gathered for Friday afternoon beers.  Honestly, it wasn’t hard for me to turn down sandwiches and milkshakes.  I knew I had a huge slab of three-layer shepherd’s pie waiting for me in the fridge. And contrary to popular belief, I can turn down a beer.  The hard part is explaining why I’m not eating a single bite at a catered lunch.  Most people who aren’t doing the Whole30 don’t really understand why anyone would ever want to do the Whole30, so it can be an awkward situation in the making.  Luckily I skirted the issue and held strong!

According to the Whole30 Timeline I should be feeling: “Kill ALL the Things”
How I’m feeling:  I still don’t want to kill anything!  Although I did sort of want to kill Courtney when he was curled up next to me on the couch breathing dark chocolate breath on me.  And my mom, when she sent me an article about girl scout cookie and beer pairings.  And Courtney again, when he cooked up a great big pan of non-compliant bacon.  Okay, maybe I want to kill things once in a while?  But it’s not terrible.

I’m so impressed by the Whole30 program! I’ve been wanting to try something like paleo or more hardcore clean eating, but I’m also a vegetarian and it’s really hard to cook anything without massive carbs! Any pointers? Keep up all that awesome will power!

I think the Whole30 would be pretty difficult as a vegetarian because the diet really revolves around meat. Almost all non-meat sources of protein (soy, all legumes, dairy) are forbidden, so I think it would be really hard to get enough protein. That said, there is a forum on Whole30 for vegetarians!
